Blantyre

I really should stop sassing people. As in when the taxi driver from the airport gives me a price that is double what it should be I say to him "I'm getting that price because I'm white and small and female, right?" Something about the way I look just says charge me double, vulnerable foreigner right here! Perhaps in a future life I will be tall and scary looking just to make up for it.

Nonetheless I've been having an interesting time exploring Blantyre, one of Malawi's main cities. It's fairly small as far as cities go, and to be quite honest there isn't much to do. But there's people to meet and food to eat, so I'm happy. I'm staying at a local backpackers lodge called Doogles, and it appears to be quite the popular place amongst locals and foreigners. Being my usual chatty self I've met lots of people. A local even showed me around today, and took me to Blantyre's small museum.

To get to the museum we took what passes for public transport here - mini buses. For the equivalent of at 23 cents you can take them just about anywhere. But be forewarned, they will fit in as many people as possible. I truly wish I had picture to show how many people they like to cram into them. But since I already stick out I didn't think that taking a picture would help me blend in anymore. I'm also pretty sure that I am the only non local to take said form of transport in all of Blantyre today. Ah well it's always an adventure here in Malawi!

Check back in later as I head to Liwonde National Park tomorrow!
